Application Procedure

Step1 : Download application documents

Refer to Eligibility Requirements for Applicants on page 2 to 3, Admission Calendar on page3 to 4 and Application Flow Chart on page 14 on the Guidelines for Applicants in 2020.

Step2 : Check your eligibility

Contact Admissions Office for any questions.

Applicants must not have Japanese citizenship and must fulfill at least one of the following four conditions:

  1. Have completed or be expected to have completed the entire period of 12 years of primary to secondary education in a country outside of Japan by March 31, 2020.
  2. Have completed or be expected to have completed 12 years of primary and secondary education by March 31, 2020 in an educational institution located in Japan which is based on a foreign country's education system and is recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Science and Technology or has received certification from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), Association of Christian Schools International (ASCI) or the Council of International Schools (CIS). [Those who wish to apply under this condition must take Examination for International Students (EJU) as national standard test.]

      *Those who have studied in a Japanese educational institution (even for a short period of time) during their 12 years of primary to secondary education.

  3. Be in possession of an International Baccalaureate, the German Abitur, or Baccalaureate attained at a secondary education institution abroad by March 31, 2020.
  4. Be in possession of an educational background that is equivalent to a). [This must be verified by Kyoto University before proceeding.]

Step3 : Submit Form A and Form D for Preliminary Verification

Submit Form A and Form D by e-mail or fax for Preliminary Verification from June 28 to July 12, 2019.

Those who are not certain about eligibility are also recommended to submit their documents for above period.

If you are confirmed as ELIGIBLE by Preliminary Verification, go to Step 4.

Step4 : Submit Application Documents to Admissions Office of International Course Program

  1. Submit Application Documents to Admissions Office of International Course Program by registered mail during the application period between August 20 and September 13, 2019.
  2. First Screening conducted by Kyoto University in late September to early October.
  3. Successful applicants at the first screening will be announced in early October, 2019.

Important Note

  • Those who intend to apply for the course under above mentioned eligibility condition b must have taken Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) as national standard test.
  • All of the applicants including the native English speakers must submit official score report of English proficiency test (either TOEFL or IELTS). [Minimum requirement: TOEFL iBT 80 or PBT 550, IELTS (Academic Module) 6.0]
  • If you have any questions on national standard test, contact Admissions Office well in advance.
  • Scores of English proficiency test and national standard test are valid if examination date is later than August 1, 2017.

    Step5 : Second Screening will be conducted

    Second Screening will be conducted by Kyoto University in mid to late October, 2019.

    Step6 : The examination results

    The examination results will be announced by postal mail on November 8, 2019. The list of successful applicants’ registration numbers will also be posted on the university’s website at 12:00 JST (GMT+9) on November 8, 2019, and can be accessed from the webpage.
