The objective of the project is to excavate and construct a 3km long tunnel section of the Shin-Meishin Expressway using the Shield Tunnelling Method. During the internship under Shimizu Coporation, I was able to learn about aspects including, but not limited to design, construction management, finance and on-site safety supervision.

I had an extremely meaning and memorable experience under the kind tutelage of Shimizu staff, who were friendly and willing to go above and beyond to resolve any queries that I might have had with their extensive knowledge and experience in their respective field of work.

Kaimuk Lhuengwongpaisarn from Thailand

Venue: Hirakata City, Osaka Pref.

Name of project: Hirakata Tunnel

Period : from August 26 to 27 and September 17 to 27, 2024

I am grateful to have participated in the Hirakata Tunnel project under Shimizu Corporation. The tunnel is excavated by using the “Shield Tunneling” method with a 17.68-meter diameter of the shield machine, the largest in the world. I was amazed by the scale of this project and how it was well planned. As I was unfamiliar with the shield tunneling method, I learnt a great deal about it, including its challenge in this project. I was impressed by the technologies and the corporation’s strong commitment to safety protocols. Learning from them, I gained invaluable insights about being civil engineers.

LI ZONGTAN from China

Venue:  Kyoto City, Kyoto Pref.

Name of project:Toba 3rd Conduit Public Sewerage Construction Project

Period : from September 13 to 30, 2024

During this internship under Taisei Corporation, I have not only been able to actually understand the details and the principles of various machine that were utilized for setting up the construction site and the designated tunnel, but also how a company would work, or to say what kind of a system the company would set up to keep the construction site moving forward continuously and smoothly. Of how they kept the information flew between each department without delay so that they could cope with the potential problems before the problems become severe.

The company also astonished me with how much importance they attach to the safety of workers, of how every individual division of work, no matter how small, would have its’ own rules that has to be followed, and is restressed every single day.

This internship under Toa Corporation has taught me a lot. Academically, I learned new concepts such as the methods for calculating wave force and positive pressure, which I believe will benefit my future studies in specialized courses. I also learned how to use CAD for drafting, which allows for a more intuitive and detailed understanding of the structure and physical characteristics of the objects I calculated. Throughout the learning process, I deeply appreciated everyone's enthusiasm and patience, as they promptly pointed out and helped me correct my mistakes when I didn’t understand something. Additionally, I experienced firsthand the meticulousness and precision required of engineers during calculations, ensuring that the industrial products they design are safer and more stable.

Sun Ruoning from China

In Taisei cooperation, I learned various new knowledges about sewerage construction, for example, ground improvement, mechanism of the general contractor, the Sheild Method, level survey, etc. In order to understand the above content precisely, instructor first taught the knowledges and then went to construction site together to actual observe how these was utilized in the real construction process.

Everyone in Taisei cooperation was kind and nice, they paid a lot attention on this internship, when I got confused about some content, they replied with patience. However, most of the materials were in Japanese, it seemed better for understanding if it can have English version.
