1) Japanese Government Scholarship (MEXT scholarship)

University Recommendation

Kyoto University will nominate and recommend to MEXT a few successful applicants who have passed all the admission screening with excellent grades and meet the requirements for this scholarship. Those who get nomination will be contacted individually by the admission office.

Embassy Recommendation

In addition to applying through university recommendations, there is another way to apply for the MEXT scholarship called the "Embassy Recommendation." To apply through this method, you must contact the Japanese Embassy in your country well before the application period to obtain the necessary information.

For those interested in enrolling in an English-taught undergraduate program at a university in Japan, like ours, there is a procedure called "Direct Placement" (known as "Chokusetsu-haichi" in Japanese). Applicants must pass both the embassy’s scholarship exam and the entrance exam for the International Course Program.

For detailed information on the application process, please contact the Japanese Embassy in your country.

Please check the link below for further information on MEXT scholarships.

2) Scholarship offered by Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)

  1. Reservation Program for Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship by EJU result

Those who achieve a high score in the ”Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)” will be eligible for the ”Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students” during their first year at a Japanese university. Additionally, those who achieve a top score in the EJU held at overseas exam sites may qualify for an extension of the scholarship until graduation.

  1. Reservation Program for Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship by Pre-arrival admission system

This scholarship is available for the 1st year international students (in the English taught course) who enroll in the universities offering "Pri-arrival admission" in Japan. Students who have started residing in Japan in advance of the university admission are not eligible. It is a 12-month scholarship which cannot be extended. Applicants for this scholarship must have an excellent academic standing.

3) Scholarship for Undergraduate International Course Program

Scholarship fund for the Undergraduate International Course Program has been established by the support of the university, the alumni association of civil engineering related departments and donors including leading companies in Japan for the limited number of students who have superior grades in the course.

4) Scholarship offered by private foundations, etc.

Private scholarship foundations offer various scholarships each year, often requiring strong Japanese language skills and excellent academic performance. Students applying for these scholarships should aim to study Japanese to at least a conversational level. Scholarship information will be updated regularly on the student portal.

- Scholarships requiring a university recommendation*                                                                                         *Above 1)-3) are not applied to this procedures.

If you wish to apply for scholarships that require a university recommendation, you will first need to complete the registration process. The International Students Division will then select candidates in two stages: first, within each faculty (e.g., Engineering, Letters, Management, Law, etc.), and second, from among the nominees across all faculties.

Registration is open three times during the academic year (e.g., September, October 2025, and April 2026 for the 2026 academic year). The registration information will be posted on KULASIS, the student portal.

Newly admitted students can submit their registration in April. However, it is rare for the first-year students to be selected, as most scholarships require an academic transcript from Kyoto university, which is not available for students in their first year.

Please note that even if you successfully complete the registration, it does not guarantee that you will be selected as a candidate.

- Scholarships without a university recommendation

Students who meet the eligibility requirements of a particular foundation can apply for these scholarships directly on their own, without needing a university recommendation. Some foundations may send information about their scholarships to the International Students Division, and we will share these opportunities on the student portal for your reference.
