During my two-week internship at Toa Corporation, I learned a lot about construction knowledge, such as photo management, drawing techniques using CAD software, the use of levels and total stations, editing drone photographs, and the design of reinforced concrete buildings. This internship meant a lot to me since it allowed me to learn a lot about marine construction projects while also expanding my construction knowledge and abilities. Furthermore, I met several nice, kindhearted, knowledgeable, and experienced people. I witnessed their enthusiasm and joy in the construction project, as well as a strong feeling of responsibility for every aspect of the project. It was an unforgettable experience that I will never forget.

The internship was a wonderful experience for me and now I think it was a really good decision to take “International Internship”. I was interested in the construction industry but could not have a clear understanding on it, but this internship helped me learn more about the industry and gave some advice to my career. Lastly, I would like to thank all the people in Toa Corporation.

 NAPATH KRAIVISITKUL   from Thailand

 Venue: Kyoto City

Name of Project: Karasuma-marutamachi shield tunnel

Period:  from  September 5 to 16, 2022

The construction was to install a 1.6 km long, 2.4 m in diameter sewage to solve a recurrent flooding. They used a tunneling machine to excavate the soil with help of soil softening substance, then assemble the tunnel from pre-casted segments. I was amazed by how careful the design of the whole construction was. They did not consider only about the quality of structure but also safety, environment, and quality of life of people around there. The internship surely provided me the experience which learning only in a classroom alone cannot provide!

NIKI KAORI   from Japan

   Venue: Kyoto City

Name of Project: Karasuma-marutamachi shield tunnel

  Period:  from September 12 to 16, 2022

First, I would like to sincerely thank all the supervisors at Maeda Corporation who kindly accepted me to do an internship at their shield tunnel site. It was such a valuable experience for me to visit an actual construction site and to see what it is like to work in a major construction company. I was able to learn many things on the field and how what we have learned in class relates to the practical situations. I saw the difficulty in managing all the processes and people, but the job is worthwhile.

This internship has been a meaningful experience for me. My internship site was about building the tunnel through mountain, so I was able to observe how tunnel is constructed in all processes. The most important thing about this was that I learned a lot of things which cannot be learned in the classroom such as to see how a construction project usually proceeds, it also helped me to illustrate how we can use the theoretical knowledge from classes into the working field. Although there was a language barrier, the staffs in the company really helped me throughout the internship.

With NiX's support for accommodation and transportation, I had opportunities to visit headquarters in Tokyo and Toyama, as well as the site like Tokyo Olympics 2020 Skateboarding arena designed by NiX. Among all activities, my favourite is the park development, where I designed public spaces with attractive events. Another enjoyable new experience was the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle exercise, in which I controlled the licensed drones and took a group photo.

I had a wonderful 2 weeks internship at Shimizu Corporation. I’ve learnt to carry
out surveys that are commonly used in the construction sites. Besides that, I was
able to experience some advanced technologies first-hand, such as the VR (Virtual
Reality) and many more interesting gadgets that I had never seen before. I would recommend all ICP students to join the internship program. It provided me insights of the operation behind construction planning and it helped me in terms of making my career path one step clearer. (I will suggest to know at least daily conversation Japanese to have a more enjoyable experience)

Period: From August 29 to September 9, 2022

International Internship is a great way to know how class taught knowledge and actual field technique can be connected. I had my internship in Kajima construction company, and it was great. Experiencing Japanese work ethics and the devotion they show to their work would also be beneficial in near future when students graduate.

CHONG SHIN YIT   from Malaysia

Venue: Hirakata City

Name of Project: Hirakata Shield Tunnel Project

Period: From August 29 to September 9, 2022

During this internship with Shimizu Corporation, I had the opportunity to study and work on the Hirakata Tunnel Project. Throughout my training, I attended client-contractor meetings, maker/supplier meetings, site visits, and lectures regarding the technical details of the shield tunneling method.
These two weeks have been really eye-opening for me as I had first-hand experience in construction management and understood the internal departments involved in a civil engineering project. This is training that cannot take place in a regular classroom. I hope to apply this knowledge to my future aspirations and my career path.

In addition, I was assigned to do cross sectional design calculations for steel members under different loading conditions for which I am grateful. SIRADA JONGWATTANAPAIBOON   from Thailand

Venue: Nishinomiya City

Name of Project: Geotechnical laboratories at Naruo Research Institute

Period: From August 29 to September 9, 2022

I got to experience geotechnical laboratories, and they are completely different from what can be found in the classroom. For example, the suction bucket test, the centrifuge model test, and the triaxial CD test. The internship experiences expand my knowledge and make me realize that there are more than meets the eyes. There are steps in the experiment that have never been mentioned in classrooms, and details that we need to be careful of. Besides the academic experience, I have learned that safety in the workplace is highly prioritized. Most importantly, it is the unity among colleagues that support experiments to continue efficiently.
