History

The Department of Civil Engineering which was founded at the same time as the Kyoto Imperial University in 1897 and the Department of Mining and Metallurgy which was founded a year later in 1898 are the parent organizations of the Undergraduate School of Global Engineering.  In 1942, the Department of Mining and Metallurgy was split into two departments and the Department of Mining was started, and then it was renamed the Department of Mineral Science and Technology in1964.

In 1958 and 1963, the Department of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering and the Department of Transportation Engineering were respectively started by separating from the Department of Civil Engineering.

Thus the basic structure of the educational and research organizations that make up the present Undergraduate School of Global Engineering was arranged by this series of reorganization.

history

In 1996, the Undergraduate School of Global Engineering was started as a new department for the undergraduate education by merging the four departments (Department of Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Environment and Sanitary Engineering, and Mineral Science and Technology) as the final merger of departments in the Faculty of Engineering.

In the Graduate School of Engineering, Department of Global Environmental Engineering was independent from the above four departments, which originally belonged to the Graduate School of Engineering in 1991, and the four departments were reorganized into the next for departments, the Department of Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Systems, Environmental Engineering, and Mineral Science and Technology, at the same time with the start of the Undergraduate School of Global Engineering in1996. Furthermore some laboratories in the above mentioned departments joined to the Department of Socio-Environmental Science and the Department of Energy Science and Technology, which belong to the Graduate School of Energy Science, in 1996 and to the Department of Technology and Ecology, which belongs to the Hall of Global Environmental Research, in2002. Later, in 2003, the five departments including the Department of Global Environmental Engineering were reorganized into the new three departments of the Graduate School of Engineering.  They are the Department of Civil and Earth Resources, the Department of Urban Management, and the Department of Urban and Environmental Engineering.
